How long can I sit in my car before getting out to run?

Sitting in my car starring at the steering wheel doesn't add motivation to my pending run on this cold October 1st, but knowing that I have my first 100 mile race in 18 days helps. I get out of my car and zip up my jacket. We're on the roller coaster of Utah's autumn season. Last week we were dying in the upper 90's and this week I wake up to 49 degrees Fahrenheit. So, was it hard getting started today? Yes! Yes, it was!

So what did I do? I ran into the wind, uphill, into the chilled canyon. I know I haven't put in enough time to be fully ready for this race physically. The transformation I've experienced over the last four years has been the ultimate build up, but I may never feel ready. I'm 40 years old for crying out loud!

If I won't be physically ready to run 100 miles, I will be mentally ready. I run into the most uncomfortable direction my legs can take me. I only planned to run 8 miles so let's make it up hill and against the wind. I shouldn't paint too grim a picture, because what goes up, must come down. So with the wind at my back and a downward slope, the second half of my run was downright pleasant. I guess it wasn't a David Goggins run after all. My run wasn't hard at all...Oh well, I'm still chipping away. I know that counting down the days will only amp up my anticipation for the Pony Express 100 miles, but screw it. Let's get hyped like kids at Christmas to go run 63 miles further than I've ever ran in my life, in less than 24 hours, in the desert...Mean Grit!
